Shibden Hall, located just outside Halifax Town centre, is set in 90 acres of rolling parkland which offers a range of attractions including woodland walks, an orienteering course, childrens playground, miniature railway, pitch & putt golf and a boating lake.
The Hall itself is almost 600 years old and is now home to the local folk museum. Although it has undergone numerous modifications and extensions over the years, its Tudor half-timbered frontage remains unchanged and is its most recognisable feature. The interior of the house offers a fascinating insight into the lives of the wealthy families who have lived there down the centuries including the Oates, the Saviles, the Waterhouses and the Listers.
Its most famous resident was Anne Lister who lived at Shibden Hall from 1826 until her death in 1840. Anne was responsible for most of the landscaping of the grounds seen today and also many of the extensions added to the Hall. She was more famously known however, for her secret diaries which recorded her daily life, including her lesbian relationships, financial concerns, industrial activities and her improvements to Shibden Hall. Anne wrote her most intimate passages of the diaries in code and these tended to detail her romantic and sexual relationships which have often led to her being dubbed as “the first modern lesbian”.
More recently the hit BBC/HBO production of “Gentleman Jack” was shot at the hall, a lively historical drama created by Sally Wainwright which details the love affair between Anne Lister and her eventual wife Ann Walker. Such has been its popularity, that since it aired earlier in 2019, visitor numbers to the Hall have more than tripled.
Shibden Hall is open seven days a week until the 24th December 2019, except for the 7 – 15 November.
PLEASE NOTE: Shibden Hall will be closed from the 7th to the 15th November 2019 for essential building works.
